Increasingly customers are interested in alternative pest control techniques that do not use man made chemical insecticides.
Organic insecticides
These are available, made from naturally occurring products such as pyrethrin insecticides which are formed from Chrysanthemum flowers.
Physical interference
There are various insecticides that work by physical interference with the insect, eg;
Diatomaceous earth damages the cuticle (insect skin) and affects water absorption, killing the insect through dehydration.
Insect Eco reduces the surface tension of water using plant oils, which in turn affects the spiracles (breathing tubes) causing the insect to drown.
If you want to avoid all chemicals (natural or man made), there are various techniques available, such as:
Traps.
These can be used for moths, fleas, flies, cockroaches, wasps, etc. They generally work with an attractant – light, heat, food or pheromone, the insect being caught on adhesive or in a liquid.
Temperature.
Heat and steam can be used to treat a variety of insects.
Rodents
Rats, mice and squirrels can all be caught with traps and cages.
Limitations
Most of these alternative techniques do have their limitations. For example the flea life cycle includes eggs and larvae that are not affected directly by the initial treatment, therefore a residual insecticide is needed to kill the flea as the adult hatches. Using these alternative techniques will therefore usually require more than one technique.
